Civil War: Company I, 1st California Infantry

Henry M. Bigelow went to California where he appears as single and a resident of Vacaville, Solano County, in the 1860 US Census. After the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted as a private at Marysville August 17, 1861, and was mustered into Company I, 1st California Infantry, at the Presidio of San Francisco August 26. Private Bigelow was posted to New Mexico Territory where he was mustered out at Fort Union August 31, 1864. Henry married Mary E. Putnam (born 1845, NY) and they settled at Montague, Michigan. He was living there with Mary and Mary's mother, Laura Putnam (born 1814, CT), in 1880 (1880 US Census). He was admitted to the NW Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, June 29, 1886, from his residence at Montague, Michigan. Henry died in the home's hospital. His home record indicates he was a widowed bookkeeper and a Catholic. His next-of-kin was his sister, Mrs. Cicely Barber, of Steubenville, Ohio.
