Deceased Name: FORMER VFW OFFICIAL JOSEPH F. BIETZ DIES

Joseph F. Bietz Jr., a retired Army captain who was a former commander of the Kentucky Veterans of Foreign Wars and a former commander of Lexington VFW Post No. 680, died Monday near Science Hill, apparently of a heart attack. Bietz, of 366 Gawaine Drive, was 64.

He was state commander from 1979 to 1980. He had been state junior vice commander of the VFW from 1977 to 1978. Bietz was commander of Post No. 680

from 1981 to 1982. He also had been on the national VFW's All-American Commanders Team and was a former state VFW quartermaster and state VFW service officer.

Bietz served in the Army from about 1940 to the late 1950s and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was awarded the Purple Heart three times and received a Bronze Star and a Silver Star.

Bietz had been active in a number of veterans projects. He was instrumental in getting Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Jessamine County expanded and reopened in 1975. The cemetery had been running out of space.

He also was a member of the American Legion.

He was a Lexington native and a member of St. Peter Catholic Church.

Bietz is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Bietz; a daughter, Brenda Sue Bietz of Asheville, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Sandra D. Gill of Lexington; two stepsons, Ples and James Smith, both of Lexington; four sisters; three grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will be in Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today and Thursday at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home.
