Doris was born in Toppenish, grew up in Prosser, and attended Whitman College and the University of Washington where she majored in music. She taught vocal music at Grandview and Ellenburg high schools. On June 6, 1942, she married fellow teacher Charles Loos. Seven weeks later, he was (not unexpectedly) drafted into the Army. While her husband was in the Army, Doris taught at Prosser High School.

After his discharge, they lived in Richland, then back to Grandview, and at last to Tacoma. She was a mostly-stay-at-home mother to two daughters although she also taught piano to a large number of budding musicians.

In 1955 she began attending Library School at the U.W. during summer sessions. She became the librarian at Jason Lee Junior High in Tacoma where she she spent 18 years.

The family attended Mason Methodist Church in Tacoma where Doris was a faithful member of the choir. She was also a P.E.O. and served three times as president of her chapter as well as holding most other offices over the years.

In 1978 she fell asleep in the Lord at the much-too-young age of 66.
