Burke E. Stewart 1915 ~ 2005 LAYTON - Burke E. Stewart, age 90, was born March 12, 1915 in Fairview, Sanpete County, Utah, the son of Lyman and Rebecca Garlic Stewart. He was raised in Milburn, Utah and graduated from North Sanpete High School. He married Alene Bills on October 25, 1937 (68 years ago) and they are the parents of three children, Ruth (Dan) Brinkerhoff, Fairview; Janice (Gerald) Jones, Layton; and Gayle (Sue) Stewart, Sandy, Utah. Burke moved to Salt Lake City shortly after his marriage and worked during World War II at Remington Arms. He later moved to Layton, Utah where he was employed at the Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield. While working there he received a Meritorious Civilian Service Award for outstanding performance of duties beyond that ordinarily required or expected from employees. This award was the second highest honorary award which the Navy could bestow on a civilian employee. He later transferred to Hill Air Force Base and retired from there. Burke and Alene enjoyed their time spent traveling throughout the United States and Canada. They spent much time hiking and fishing as well as sight-seeing together. Burke and Alene were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have lived in the boundaries of the Layton Park Ward where they have both been recognized for their compassionate service. Burke is survived by his wife, Alene, and their children, as well as 18 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Jay Stewart, CA; Larry Stewart, Milburn; and a sister, Glenda Martell, Orem. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Val Dean, Rell, and Glen, and an infant brother, Lon Stewart, as well as a grandson, Matthew Burke Brinkerhoff. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 29, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Rock Chapel in Fairview, 141 E. 100 No. Friends and family may call one hour prior to services at the church. Friends and family may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Interment, Fairview City Cemetery. e-mail condolences to the family at [email protected]
