Mattie Hennan's mother was of Irish and her father was of Scot descent. Mother Alice was just 16 when she married. Mattie had a younger brother Clarence Hennan born circa 1881. Father deserted the family and joined the Spanish American war effort. By 1883, Mattie was adopted by Willis & Irene Barrett of Akron, Ohio. But by 1895, Mattie was back living with her mother in Akron, after the unexpected death of Willis Barrett, and both mother & daugther were using Alice's maiden name Shannon. We don't know what happened to brother Clarence.
