British Army Officer, Surveyor. He began his career in the army, and joined the Great Trigonometric Survey of India in 1832. In 1843 he replaced Sir George Everest as Surveyor General and continued his work in the Himalayas. In 1852 "Peak XV" was confirmed as the highest mountain peak in the world, and he proposed that it be named Mount Everest in his predecessor's honour. His identification of Everest as the highest peak led to the Royal Geographic Society awarding him its Patron's Medal in 1857, and he was made a fellow of the Royal Society a year later. He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 1861.
