Former Anchorage resident William James Biederman, 74, died Jan. 9, 1996, in Phoenix following a brief illness. A memorial service was held at Chapel by the Sea, 14730 Old Seward Highway, with the Rev. Brian Chronister officiating.

Mr. Biederman was born March 30, 1921, in Shamokin, Pa. He attended California Polytechnic Institute in San Luis Obispo, Calif., where he studied aeronautical engineering. Mr. Biederman served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and came to Alaska in 1942. He retired in 1974 from Elmendorf Air Force Base as superintendent of aircraft maintenance after 30 years of service. Mr. Biederman was one of a small group of founders of Alaska USA Federal Credit Union and served as its first president. He was a member of the Anchorage Elks Lodge and supported Father Flanagan's Boys Town and other charities that helped children. Mr. Biederman's family said: ''He enjoyed hunting, fishing and home building. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and was always willing to help those in need. He taught his family many things through great example and diligent one-on-one consultation. His awesome patience, honesty and integrity will live on in the memories of all who knew him.''

Mr. Biederman is survived by his wife, Irene of Phoenix and Anchorage; three daughters, Gayle Ross of Kenai, Vicki Sharp of Philadelphia, and Linda Biederman of Anchorage; two sons, Jim of Bethesda, Md., and Paul of Anchorage; grandchildren, Robert and David Ross of Kenai, Tammie Sharp of Anchorage, Torrey Sharp of Portland, Ore., Trudy and Trevor Sharp of Philadelphia, Will Biederman II of Bethesda, and Kyle, Kevin and Kurt Biederman, of Anchorage; and three great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Curry and Cassie and Taylor Ross, all of Kenai. Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1057 W. Fireweed Lane, Suite 204, Anchorage 99503. Arrangements were handled by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
