Son of Hon. Reverend Theophilus Cushing and Mary Jacob Thaxter. Grandson of Hon. Daniel Cushing and Lydia Clark Gilman, Captain John Thaxter and Elizabeth Jacob.

Abel married Mary Allen Jacob, daughter of Peter Jacob and Hannah Allen. They were married 24 Nov 1720 in Hingham, Plymouth, MA and had ten children:

Abel resided on South Pleasant Street, South Hingham. He was a Selectman for many years. "Brothers Abel and Theophilus, leaders of the clan in South Hingham, were wealthy farmers and mill owners. Abel owned a fulling-mill on South Pleasant Street."

Ebenezer Thayer's (Suffolk Co.) regt.; enlisted July 22, 1780; discharged Oct. 29, 1780; service, 3 mos. 11 days, travel included, at Rhode Island; company raised to reinforce Continental Army for 3 months; also, return of men raised agreeable to resolve of Dec. 2, 1780; engaged for town of Hingham; engaged April 6, 1781; term, 3 years; also, receipt dated Hingham, April 16, 1781, for bounty paid said Cushing by Col. David Cushing, Chairman of Class No. 24 of the town of Hingham, to serve in the Continental Army for the term of 3 years; also, Private, Capt. Seth Banister's co., Col. William Shepard's (4th) regt.; muster rolls for May and July, 1781, dated Phillipsbourgh; enlisted March 29, 1781; enlistment, 3 years; also, muster roll for Aug., 1781, dated Camp at Peekskill; also, muster roll for Sept., 1781, dated Continental Village; also, muster rolls for Oct., 1781-Feb., 1782, dated York Hutts; reported present but sick in Dec., 1781.
