DAVID LAURENCE HUTSON


David Laurence Hutson, 71, of Waldport, Ore., died of cancer on April 22, 2009 in Waldport.

He was born April 18, 1938 in Chicago. He was a member of the U.S. Army as a private first class for two years and served in Korea. He earned his bachelor's degree in music education in Champaign, Ill.

He was a composer, arranger, conductor, producer and performer on alto and tenor saxophones and the clarinet. He composed, arranged and produced music for many of the foremost artists of our time. He was musical director for major musical events worldwide in New York, Los Angeles, Europe, Asia and points in between. He performed with more than 55 world famous personalities and orchestras, and received favorable press notices from music columnists and critics nationwide. He is listed in The Encyclopedia of Jazz in the Seventies.

Most notably, he composed, arranged and produced music for the Music of Duke Ellington, Carnegie Hall, N.Y.; Harry James Orchestra, Hollywood, Calif.; New McKinney's Cotton Pickers, Bountiful Records, Michigan; Rhythm Kings, Los Angeles; Del Shannon and many more.

As a musical director, he directed the Music of Bix Beiderbecke and Newport Jazz Festival, among others. As an instrumental performer, he played for such musicians as Sidney Bechet, the Merv Griffin Show, Bob Hope, Frankie Laine, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Mills Brothers, Dizzy Reece, Frank Sinatra Jr., Denny Zeitlin, Tony Bennett and Bobby Darin.

In 1965, he married Meeja Kim in Seoul, South Korea. They made their home in Waldport, where he was a member of the Waldport Community Presbyterian Church for 10 years, serving as an elder for two years. He was also a member of the Musician's Union for more than 55 years in California and New York.

He is survived by his wife, Meeja; son, Andrew (Sandra Dewittie) Hutson of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter Jennifer (Curtis) Sykes of Saugus, Calif.; sister, Faye (Bob) Doll of West Bloomfield, Mich.; aunt, Helen of Florida and granddaughter, Alyssa Sykes of Saugus, Calif.

A celebration of life tribute with a jazz band will be at the First Presbyterian Church in Newport in May at a time to be announced.

He will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Calif.
