He was the son of Stephen Hardin and Elizabeth Parker Hardin. On October 4, 1889, he married Edith Stanton King at Willet's Point, New York. He was Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Doane University in Nebraska from 1894-1898. Hardin Butte at the Lava Beds National Monument is named in his memory.

Retirement of Major Hardin
Major Charles B. Hardin, 20th Infantry, has been placed on the retired list on account of disability incurred in the line of duty. Major Hardin is a native of Illinois and entered the army as a private in August 1872. In April 1882, he was appointed second lieutenant of the 18th Infantry and was graduated from the Infantry and Cavalry School in 1885. He has been major of the 20th Infantry since august 1903 and has been lately stationed at the presidio of Monterey, California.
