Sarah Bryan was born in Johnston Co, NC, youngest of 4 known children born to Needham Bryan III and Sarah "Sallie" Hinton. On her paternal side, she was granddaughter of Col. Needham Bryan II & Nancy Ann Smith; and gr-granddaughter of Needham Bryan I & Annie Rombeau of "Snowfield Plantation" in Bertie Co, NC. She is a direct descendant of John Bryan who immigrated from Ireland to Isle of Wight, VA ca. 1650. One her maternal side, she is granddaughter of Col. John Hinton & Grizelle Kimbrough; and was 1st cousin, once removed to her husband.

Sarah married John "Jack" Hinton, IV sometime between 1793-1797 and they would have 10 known children: Martha (1798), Grazelle (1800), John Hinton V (1802), Sarah Hinton (1804), Benjamin E. Hinton (1805), Dr. Robert Hinton (1808), Willis Hinton (ca. 1810), Oscar Hinton (1812), Claudia Hinton (1814) and William Hintn (ca. 1815).

Sarah died in 1815, soon after the birth of her 10th child. She was only 36 years old. Her husband survived another 29 years, passing in 1844 at age 74.
