Staff Sgt. Benjamin "Levi" Pigman, 25, died April 25, 2009, at Nashville General Hospital after he collapsed following completing the Country Music Half-Marathon in Nashville earlier that morning.
Pigman was a native of Hamilton, Mont., and volunteered for Army service in October 2001. Following basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., advanced individual training at Fort Eustis, Va., and Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga., he successfully assessed with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) as a helicopter engine mechanic. Pigman arrived to his first duty station with the 2nd Bn., 160th SOAR(A), at Fort Campbell, Ky., in July 2002.
He is a combat veteran with five deployments, four in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan and once in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
His military training includes U.S. Army Airborne School, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Warrior Leader Course, Airloaders Course Special Operations Aviation assessment and training program and Combat Life Savers training. Pigman's awards include four Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global on War Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Aviation Badge, Parachutist Badge, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon and Army Service Ribbon.
Pigman is survived by his father and step mother, Ronald "Chip" and Anne Pigman and his three brothers, Timothy Pigman, Tyler Pigman, and Dillon Pigman of Hamilton; and his mother and step father, Pamela D. Koreski and Chris Koreski, also of Hamilton.

"Our entire unit is mourning the tragic loss of Staff Sgt. Levi Pigman," Lt. Col. Thomas Drew, a commander with the 2nd Battalion, said in a statement released by the Army. "We've shared many personal and professional stories about him this weekend since news of his passing. By all counts, he was an outstanding soldier and wonderful son, brother and friend to many. He will certainly be missed and not easily replaced amongst our ranks. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family and friends."

Pigman's unit will hold a service for him at Fort Campbell next Monday. Funeral service details in Hamilton are pending.


Visitation will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at the Daly-Leach Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the Hamilton Performing Arts Center at Hamilton High School. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Hamilton with full military honors.

He spent most of his early years growing up in the Bitterroot Valley, and graduated from Hamilton High School in 2001. He enjoyed many activities, including HHS Guys and Dolls, golf, bowling, softball, soccer, hunting, fishing, skeet and motorcycle riding.

Levi volunteered for Army service in October 2001. Following basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., advanced individual training at Fort Eustis, Va., and Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga., he successfully assessed with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) as a helicopter engine mechanic. He is a combat veteran with four deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and one deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Levi Pigman had extensive military training and was awarded four Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, five campaign and service medals, Aviation and Parachutist badges, and deployment and service ribbons.

Levi will be remembered for his particular zeal in life and his unique and prevalent smile. He went to be with our Lord on April 25, 2009, in Nashville, at 25 years old.

He is survived by his parents Chip and Anne Pigman and Chris and Pam Koreski of Hamilton; his brother Tim and wife Courtney and girls; his brothers Tyler and Dillon; his great-grandmother Viola Samuelson of Hamilton; eight grandparents, numerous aunts and uncles and cousins; and special love Amanda Hovey.

Visitation will be held at 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 1, at the Daly-Leach Chapel. Funeral services will be held in the Performing Arts Center at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Hamilton High School. Special graveside services by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment will follow at the Hamilton Riverview Cemetery. After burial, the public is invited to the Hamilton Assembly of God Church on Main Street for a luncheon and a time of reflection.
