Pioneer Alaskan Mortimer M. "Moose" Moore, 93, died June 24, 2006, at his Anchorage home. A funeral was held at Abbott Loop Community Church. The Rev. Brian Green officiated. Burial was afterward in Anchorage Memorial Park.
He was born June 22, 1913, in Hillsdale, Mich. In 1946, he packed up his wife and two small children and boarded the Alaska Steamship Co. to Seward and then the train to Anchorage. He filed on a homestead shortly after his arrival. Mr. Moore learned to fly as a young man in Michigan. He worked as a flight instructor and commercial pilot by day and as a police officer at night after his arrival in Anchorage. He was active in the Civil Air Patrol. He was a commercial fisherman from 1948 to 1950. He served as a deputy for the territorial Department of Taxation. After statehood, he worked for the Department of Revenue. An avid outdoorsman and registered big game guide and hunter, his ability to successfully hunt and pack out moose earned him his nickname "Moose Meat," from his friend Buell Nesbett, the first justice of the Alaska Supreme Court. A gym that Moore helped to establish later became the Captain Cook Athletic Club, which he managed for more than 12 years until his retirement. Bodybuilding was another of Mr. Moore's pursuits, and he competed in and won three first place titles in the Mr. Senior America bodybuilding competition when he was in his 70s. Along with his two children, Mr. Moore raised two bears under the auspices of the Department of Fish and Game. The female bear liked to ride in the basket of Moore's dog sled and would set the pace while hooked up as the lead "dog." Film footage of the bear leading the dog team was used in his successful legislative campaign for the House of Representatives in 1967-68. Mr. Moore graduated from Abbott Loop Charismatic Bible College of Anchorage. Scripture memorization was a pastime, and he committed whole chapters and books of the Bible to memory in English and Spanish. In 1977, he married Brenda Tanner.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda; children, Michael Moore and Sarah Baskurt; grandchildren, Marcus and Christopher Moore and James and Chase Christie; step-grandchildren, C.J., Eric, Kyle and Cyndy Mead; brother- and sister-in-law, Tony and Leslie Rabang; niece and nephew, Nathan and Marianne Rabang; and nine great-grandchildren.
