JOSEPH R. SUMMERHAYS

Joseph Rowland Summerhays, age 76, died October 16, 1990, in Salt Lake City after a long illness.

He was born May 1, 1914 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Joshua James and Mary Bennion Summerhays. Married Phoebe Sherrig in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 7, 1936.

Joe lived all of his life in the Salt Lake area. Was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in various offices all his life. He was an accomplished vocalist, singing with the Tabernacle Choir for 28 years, many of them as soloist. From 1976 through 1978, he and his wife served a mission to the Washington D.C. Temple visitors center.

He graduated from the University of Utah. While there he was known as handyman of the Utes playing on the football and baseball teams, and also ran the high-hurdles. He earned a spot on the basketball team two years running but dropped out when his friends were cut and joined them playing church and city ball. He played fast-pitch softball in the city leagues on state championship teams.

He was an avid fisherman, and hunter. In his middle years he took up golf and won many state championships. He was president and co-owner of Utah Wool Pulling Company and J.W. Summerhays and Sons, Inc., a three-generation family wool business. He had a broad range of abilities and interests from designing and building a cabin in the mountains to needlepoint and gardening, but was best known for his beautiful voice.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and is survived by his sons, J. Terry (Anna), Salt Lake; Jeffrey P. (Teri), Del Mar, California; Steven R., Salt Lake; Daniel S. (Connie), Murray, Utah; and a daughter, Mrs. Reed (Susan) Hailes, West Bountiful, Utah; 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard B. (Beth) Salt Lake; and two sisters, Mrs. A. Quentin (Virginia) Howard, Salt Lake; and Mrs. Sam (Ruth) Rich II, Salt Lake.

Preceded in death by his wife, Phoebe; a daughter, Janet; and a brother, Ben.

Funeral services Tuesday, October 23rd, 12 noon, at the 21st Ward Chapel, 2nd Avenue and K Street. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, on Monday evening 6-8 pm, and at the Ward on Tuesday, 10:45-11:45 am. Interment will be in the Murray City Cemetery, 5600 South 800 East.
