MRS. V. C. CLEEK CALLED BEYOND

Passed Away at Home East of Town Wednesday After Short Illness

Mrs. V. C. Cleek, Sr., passed away at her home a few miles east of town last Wednesday at 11 o'clock a. m. after an illness of only a few days. Death was due to pernicious malarial fever. Owing to the fact that Coroner Reidy of Willows was sent for to hold an inquest, the report became circulated that deceased had ended her live with poison. It is to be regretted that such a rumor should have been started, and in justice to the deceased and the family, we believe that the facts should be known. Dr. Iglick who attended Mrs. Cleek during her illness, found it necessary to administer strychnine in the medicine he prescribed, as is often done in cases where the patient has a weak heart. After Mrs. Cleek's death the physician learned that he was being held to blame, and that he was charged with prescribing strychnine in a dangerous quantity. Iglick at once demanded an inquest, and Corner Reidy of Willows was summoned. The family was averse to a post mortem examination, but Iglick refused to sign the death certificate until he was exonerated. District Attorney Purkett of Willows assisted by Dr. T. T. Purkett made an investigation by witnesses and the symptoms shown by the deceased, and it was proven to the satisfaction of the District Attorney that there was no cause for further investigation, thus exonerating Dr. Iglick.
Deceased was 52 years of age and was a pioneer of this section. She was one of God's noble women, and the people of this community feel deeply the death of her, who was ever a loving and devoted wife and mother in her home, and a kind friend to all. She leaves besides a husband, Vincent C. Cleek, Sr. seven children - six sons and one daughter. They are Andrew, Vincent C., Jeb, John L., Sam and James Cleek, and Mrs. John C. Hamilton, all of Orland excepting John L., who resides at Wheatland.
To add to the cares of the sorrow stricken family, Andrew, the eldest son, and his wife are both critically ill at the parents' home.
The funeral was held at 3:30 p. m. last Thursday from the home of deceased, interment taking place at Odd Fellow's cemetery. Rev. R. C. R. Jackson conducted the services. - Transcribed by E.
