Additional Information:
Charles S Vaughan was preceded in death by his wife, Hannah Vosbinder Vaughan, two sons, Charles S, Jr. and David.

Charles enlisted on August 24, 1861 in the First Regiment of Wisconsin Cavalry Volunteers, Company B as a Private. He was discharged from this company due to contracting malaria at Cape Girardeau, Missouri October 16, 1862.

After his recovery, he re-enlisted in the Third Regiment of Wisconsin Cavalry Volunteers, Company H and then was later transferred to Company A. He was mustered out June 19, 1865.

Charles second married Susan Brown, born in Iowa in 1876, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They were blessed with the birth of four children, Nellie Mae, Frank Leroy, Grace Elizabeth, and Edward Hugh.

A visit to Eau Claire in between stays at the various veterans homes, Susan became pregnant again. She was 41 years old and Charles was 61 years old. They had divorced in 1896. He was on disability and she had only the money she made as a seamstress. She went quietly to Minneapolis and had her baby, a boy on July 5, 1899, which was named on the birth certificate, Charles Vaughan. She gave the child to the Children's Finding Home in St. Paul, Minnesota. She went back to Eau Claire and married Burr L. Avery on October 28, 1900.

The child was eventually adopted by George Taylor and Alma Olson Valentine of Dakota County, Minnesota, later of Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The fifth and last child of Charles and Susan Brown Vaughan became Vernon Clemens Valentine.

Charles was a log scaler and carpenter by trade but as the years passed he was less able to continue in those careers. He applied for Disability Pension on May 2, 1887. He spent the rest of his years in and out of Veterans Homes in Milwaukee, WI, Leavenworth, KS and Hot Springs, SD where he died from complications of the malaria, a stroke and senility at the age of 78 years.
