He was born at Ledyard, Connecticut, son of Benjamin and Clarissa Allyn Spicer; married Diana Crumwell at Griswold August 24, 1851. He died at the home of his daughter Lulu, wife of John Palmer.

During the Civil War he was captured at Winchester, Virginia and released a month later.
