Aline Virginia Goodwin Douglas, 84, of Salem, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2009. Aline lived a life of kindness and caring and leaves behind a legacy of virtue. She was born in Glenvar at the country store known at that time as W.O. Goodwin's. She attended Fort Lewis School, Andrew Lewis High School and Berea College. Aline lived in many parts of the country and served numerous Baptist churches along with her former husband, Rev. Mack R. Douglas. She was employed for many years by the Southwestern Virginia Training Center, Hillsville. In recent years, she lived at Richfield Retirement Community; first at Knollwood Apartments and more recently at Joseph C. Thomas Center Assisted. Many people will miss Aline, including her loving children, Claire Douglas Beach, of Edmonds, Wash., Don Douglas, of Seoul, Korea, Laura Douglas, of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Elaine Douglas, of Shoreline, Wash. Other loved ones include sister-in-law, Sue Goodwin, of Roanoke; daughter-in-law, Peggy Fitzpatrick Douglas, of Rockville, Md.; foster daughter, Judi Cohen and husband, Brad, of Atlanta; and grandchildren, Jesse, Megan (Malia), Cailen and Rowen. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Evelyn Giles, of Roanoke and Kathleen Seymour, of St. Augustine; and brothers, Robert Goodwin, of Warrenton, Va., and George Goodwin, of Roanoke. A funeral service will be held at the Chapel at Fort Lewis Baptist Church, 4215 W. Main Street, Salem, Friday, May 1, 2009, at 1 p.m. Internment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. Reception following at the Shenandoah Room of Knollwood Apartments, Richfield. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 30, 2009, from 4 to 6 p.m. at John M. Oakey and Son of Salem. In order to thank Aline's extraordinary caregivers, remembrances may be made in her honor to Joseph C. Thomas Center Appreciation Fund, c/o Shelby Davis, JCT, 3939 Daugherty Road, Salem 24153.
