Catherine was the daughter of Valentine Ryan and Bridget Tobin, who married 21 September 1837 in Kilmacow Parish, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. Up to their emigration from Ireland in 1852/3 (Valentine came ahead of his wife and children), the Ryan family lived in the townland of Killahy outside the village of Mullinavat. The area in which they lived is also sometimes referred to as Buckstown. In 1852, Valentine emigrated to America, arriving in New Orleans on Christmas day that year. His wife Bridget came the following year with their children Margaret, Patrick, and Catherine, and the family settled several years in Clarke Co., Mississippi, before moving in 1859 to Jefferson (later Grant) Co., Arkansas, where they settled in the Orion community. Catherine married George Richard, son of Moses B. Batchelor and Minerva Monk, about 1869 in Jefferson Co., Arkansas.

The inscription on Catherine's tombstone reads,

"Catherine, Wife of George R. Batchelor, Born in Kilkenny, Ire., Aug. 19, 1849, died Nov. 13, 1910 Mother, thou has from us flown / To the regions far above / We to thee erect this stone / Consecrated by our love."
