In 1860, he was a laborer living with his young family in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Paradise Township, Lancaster County, August 6, 1862, and mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. I, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry.
On October 12, 1862, he was detailed to the pioneer corps, but returned to the regiment, date unknown. He was twice injured during the battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. A shell fragment struck his left knee after which a horse trampled him, injuring his left hip. He honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.
