US Congressman. An 1849 graduate of Amherst College, he studied theology and graduated from Auburn Theological Seminary in 1852. He was ordained a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church and became a professor of mental and moral philosophy in Amherst College from 1858 to 1876. He was elected as an Independent to Congress and served a single term, from 1875 to 1877. Declining to run for a second term, he became president of Amherst College, serving from 1876 to 1890.
