NANCY M. BEYER DIES MOTHER OF FORMER LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR
When Nancy McDonald Beyer's second child was born with mental retardation, the course of her later life already had begun to take shape.

"Raising my sister was somewhat of a challenge, but when she grew to be an adult, my mother started thinking, 'What is she now going to do as an adult?'" said Mrs. Beyer's son, former Virginia Lt. Gov. Donald S. Beyer Jr. of Alexandria.

In 1997, Mrs. Beyer received the Maggie Walker NAACP Community Service Award for her political activism over the years to create opportunities for her daughter and other people with mental retardation and disabilities.

Mrs. Beyer, 73, died Sunday at her Falls Church home. She had suffered with myeloproliferative disorder, a blood disorder.

She served for a number of years as president of ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens) of Northern Virginia, which provides services to people with mental retardation. She was a co-founder and trustee of the ARC Foundation.

She had been a member of the Coalition for the Mentally Disabled for Northern Virginia and a director of Langley Residential Support Services, a group home for adults with mental retardation, and of the sheltered Occupational Center in Arlington County.

Mrs. Beyer was a familiar face at Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meetings and at the Virginia General Assembly, where she testified in support of employment and group housing for people with mental illness and disabilities.

She and her husband also had worked in support of Camp Tapawingo, a former camp for mentally disabled adults in Prince William County.

A White Plains, N.Y., native, she moved with her family to the Washington area during the 1930s.

She attended George Washington University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and graduated from Barnard College in 1947.

During the late 1940s, she taught fifth and sixth grades in the U.S. Army school in Trieste, Italy. In 1948, she married Donald S. Beyer.

Mrs. Beyer was a former lector and prefect of the sodality at Our Lady of Victory Church in Washington. She was a member of the Catholic Church of the Nativity in Burke.

For more than 20 years, she was a weekly volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Survivors, besides her husband and son, include another son, Michael Beyer of Falls Church; and four daughters, Sandra Beyer of Richmond, Marylee "Weetie" Hill of Vienna, Sherry Beyer of Fairfax and Katherine Beyer of Falls Church.

Her funeral Mass will be said Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Nativity in Burke. Burial will be private.

Nancy McDonald Beyer, 73, an activist for the mentally disabled and the mother of former Lt. Gov. Donald S. Beyer Jr., died of a blood disease Sept. 12 at her Falls Church home.

Her advocacy for people with mental disabilities grew from her concern for her daughter, who was born retarded.

"Raising my sister was somewhat of a challenge, but when she grew to be an adult, my mother started thinking, 'What is she now going to do as an adult?' " Mr. Beyer said.

Mrs. Beyer served as president of the Association for Retarded Citizens of Northern Virginia, which provides services to people with mental retardation. She appeared often before local government bodies and the Virginia General Assembly in support of employment and group housing for mentally disabled people.

Survivors include her husband, Donald S. Beyer Sr.; two sons, Mike Beyer and Donald S. Beyer Jr.; and four daughters, Kathy Beyer, Sandy Beyer, Sherry Beyer and Weetie Hill.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today at Church of the Nativity in Burke.
