Little is known about Conrad Beyer or Bair or Byer or Baier, to list just a few of his surname spellings. He claimed that he was living in Baltimore, Maryland at the time of enlistment, although there is some indication that he may have living in York County, Pennsylvania. A laborer by trade, he stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Baltimore October 9, 1861, as a private with Co. C, 3rd Maryland Infantry. He dislocated his left hip in a fall at Antietam September 17, 1862, and hospitalized at Harpers Ferry, (West) Virginia, then transferred to Douglas U.S. Hospital, Washington DC, where he served as a hospital attendant through July 29, 1863. Finally back to duty, he contracted typhoid fever and on September 1, 1863, transferred to the 47th Co., 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps, from where he honorably discharged at term's end October 8, 1864.

He entered the soldiers' home at Hampton, Virginia, on September 5, 1876, where he remained for the rest of his life, dying in the facility's hospital.
