Chris B. Callan Taken By Death

Chris B. Callan, veteran Travis county court bailiff and long a familiar figure about the courthouse here, died Monday about 8:30 a.m. at the Callan family home, 602 Rio Grande Street.

Courthouse associates said Mr. Callan complained of not feeling well and was taken home. Saturday the cold of which he complained grew worse and over the weekend he was reported in grave condition.

Formerly a printer by trade, Mr. Callan many years ago served in the Texas legislature. He had been deputy sheriff and court bailiff under appointment by Sheriff Lee O. Allen during the past four years of Allen's tenure in office.

Funeral arrangements were pending.

Mr. Callan was born Sept. 10, 1865, in Washington, D.C.

He was a member of the local Typographical Union for more than 50 years and for the past three years he has been court bailiff for Travis county.

Survivors are his widow, three sisters, Mrs. A. H. Luck of Houston; Mrs. V. H. Pannell and Miss Ella Callan, both of Austin, and five brothers, George J., Joe, John, Walter and Robert Callan.

The body was at Meeks-Hytlin Funeral Home.
