Mary Helena Huish Evans, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away quietly at her Murray, Utah home, March 4, 1995 at the age of 88. She was surrounded by members of her family, whom she loved with all her heart and who dearly loved her.

Helena was born September 8, 1907 in Colonia Morelos, Sonora, Mexico as the 12th child of Lorenzo Snow Huish and Annie Eliza Broadbent. Hers was a life of devotion and service to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, her husband, family and friends. She married Marius Oman Evans, May 27, 1927 in the Salt Lake Temple. Three days later he left her for two years to serve as a missionary in the Southern States.

As she worked along side her husband in the family dry cleaning business in Bisbee, Arizona and later in Murray, Utah, she raised five children: one daughter, Vera (Delbert) Eddington; and four sons, David O. (June), John R. (Gayle), Arza C. (Mary Anne), and Charles A. (Connie) Evans.

She is survived by her husband; five children; 35 grandchildren; 100 great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Enda Hilton.

After raising her family, she went back to school graduating from the University of Utah with a B.S. in Sociology and in 1961 with a Masters Degree in Social Work. She worked for the LDS Social Services as a marriage counselor and supervised the placement of hundreds of children for adoptions, until she left for England where she served a mission from 1965-1967 with her husband. Upon her return she resumed her work as a supervisor of the LDS Social Services.

In addition to her professional and family duties, Helena held many positions of service and leadership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and devoted thousands of hours to genealogical work. She concluded her church service with many years as a Gospel Doctrine teacher.

Although her wisdom and love will be missed, her influence on her posterity and those she served and taught will stand as an eternal tribute to her selfless, unwavering commitment to doing what was right.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 7, 1996 at the Murray Park Ward Chapel, 435 East 5600 So., Murray, Utah. Friends may call one hour prior to the services or at the viewing Wednesday evening, March 6th, at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State between 6-8 p.m. Interment will be at the Murray City Cemetery.
