Only child of John Sanders and Catherine Gannaway.

He was called "the younger," to distinguish him from his uncle, Col. Stephen Sanders of Cripple Creek.

He married Martha "Mattie" Newell on Jan. 8, 1787. She was a daughter of James Newell, Jr., and Sarah Wood.

In 1789, Stephen was Deputy Sheriff of Montgomery (now Wythe) Co., VA. In 1790, he was a captain in the Militia, Wythe Co., VA. He owned 140 acres of land on New River.
