On December 23, 1936, Donald married Hazel Alvina Volkers, daughter of John Henry Volkers and Levina Martha Tripp in Holland, Michigan. The following year in July, they welcomed their eldest child Doris into the world. In December of 1937, they left the Battle Creek area and moved back to Holland. Upon their return to Holland, Don went back to work at the family business- Shady Lawn Florists.
Don and Hazel welcomed four more children to the family after Doris. They were Llewellyn, Darwin Gene, Patricia Ann and David Allyn. Darwin Gene died just a few days after birth.
Don stayed with the family floral business until his death on October 24, 1987. He is buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery in the same plot as his parents.

Donald Vander Ploeg, 78 of 275 E. 16th St., died Saturday evening, October 24, in Holland Community Hospital after an extended illness.
He was the former owner of Shady Lawn Florist in Holland. He was a member of Central Avenue Christian Reformed Church.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel; two sons, Llewellyn Vander ploeg of Holland and David Vander ploeg of Zeeland; two daughters, Mrs Jerome (Doris) Bouws of Holland and Mrs Robert (Patricia) Edmonds of Berlin, Wisconsin; six grandchildren; a brother Herbert L. Vander Ploeg of Holland; and a sister, Mrs. D. M. (Bernice) Boer of Leawood, Kan.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Notier-Ver Lee- Langeland Chapel, 315 E 16th Street., with the Rev Jacob Uitvlugt officiating. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
