Hall of Fame College Football Coach. Born John Franklin Broyles, he was best known for coaching the University of Arkansas football team from 1958 to 1976 and leading the Razorbacks to a national championship in 1964. He played football collegiately at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and starred at the quarterback position. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 1946 NFL Draft, but decided to go into coaching instead. He started as an assistant coach at Baylor University in 1947 and followed that with stints at the University of Florida and Georgia Tech before getting his first head coaching job with the University of Missouri in 1957. He coached the Tigers for one year before being offered the head coaching position at the University of Arkansas in 1958. He accepted the offer and served as the head coach of the Razorbacks for the next eighteen years. Besides the one national championship in 1964, the Razorbacks won seven Southwest Conference titles and two Cotton Bowl Classics under Broyles' leadership. He also was awarded both the AFCA and Sporting News Coach of the Year awards in 1964. His record with the Razorbacks was 144-58-5. After he stepped down as coach in 1976, he remained as athletic director (a position he had been appointed to in 1974) until retiring in 2007. During his tenure as athletic director, the Razorbacks' athletic program was very successful, winning many titles and championships in various sports. He also was the primary color commentator for college football broadcasts on ABC from 1977 to 1985. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983. He passed away from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
