Sarah May DeBusk came into this world at the home of her grandparents John Aynes and Sarah Russell Honeycut in Grosvenor, Brown County a year before the millennium. Her parents James Jackson DeBusk and Lucy Ann Aynes lived a short distance away in the northwest corner of Brown County, Texas. She grew up in a house that William Andrew DeBusk, the father of James Jackson DeBusk, built for them. He built a house for all his children on his ranch. Sarah attended school at The Kid Peak School a few miles from her parents home. In 1912 William Andrew DeBusk sold his ranch to his brother Elijah DeBusk and moved to Erath County, Texas. Her father rented a farm near the Cottonwood Community in Erath County, Texas.

She married Charlie Lee Patterson just after turning 22 years old, he had just turned 43 years old. They were married in Jones County, Texas at the home of her father. Initially, they worked on a farm in Jones County, Texas belonging to her Aunt and Uncle Robert Daniel Jones and Martha Jane DeBusk. Their first child, George James Patterson was born on 31 December 1921 near Tuxedo, Jones County, Texas.

Sometime before 1925 they moved to Lynn County, Texas where they worked on a farm owned by James Vaughn Dyer, a first cousin once removed of Charlie's. Dyer got him a place to farm on the halves about 6 miles from Tahoka on the Post Highway. A deal was reached where the the owner would furnish all the equipment and a house with a 50-50 split on the crops.
