Dixie Otterson, a longtime resident of Long Beach, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, April 20, 2009 at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto due to complications from a heart attack and stroke. She had recently celebrated her 91st birthday with her family.
Dixie Otterson was born Beverly Dixie Taylor on April 5, 1918 in Ely, NV and moved several times growing up, including to Utah, Minnesota, and British Columbia.
Her father, Henry Ross Taylor, worked as an engineer and brought his family with him as he pursued a career in mining. Dixie attended the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C., and then transferred to the University of Southern California, where she graduated with a B.S. in Pharmacology in 1940.
She met her first husband Noble Lorain Millie at USC, where he was studying engineering. The couple married in 1942 and moved to Long Beac h. Dixie worked as a pharmacist in Long Beach and as a chemist at Union Oil Refinery in Wilmington, Ca. Dixie and Noble raised two children: a son, John Ross Millie and a daughter, Nancy Millie Clock.
Dixie was an avid skier, golfer and pilot. She lived for 42 years in Long Beach. After 32 years of marriage, Noble died in 1974. Dixie met Lee Otterson in 1982 through Aviation Country Club, and they were married in 1984.
She moved to Colusa, CA to join Lee and made many new friends there. The two recently cel ebrated their 25th anniversary. Dixie and Lee loved traveling together and also enjoyed spending time at their homes in Belvedere and Palm Desert.
Dixie is survived by her loving family: her husband, Lee Otterson of Colusa and Palo Alto; son, John Ross Millie of San Ramon, CA; daughter, Nancy Millie Clock of Tiburon, CA; former daughter-in-law, Carol Millie of Los Altos, CA; and seven grandchildren, Alex Millie, Noble Millie, Ramsay Millie, Michele Clock, Nicole Clock, Diana Clock and Henry Clock. Dixie is also survived by three step-children, DiDi Flint of Mill Valley, CA, Helen Rodde of Napa, CA, and Bert Otterson of Walnut Creek, CA; and seven step-grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating Dixie's life will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 in the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, 950 Santa Cruz Avenue, Menlo Park.
