Infant son of Helena Cohn and George Brownstein.

California State Registered Historical Landmark No. 377 is located one hundred yards east of the baby's grave site, and is declared the state's official memorial to the interment of this infant.

Because this grave and original headstone was near land first set aside as a Jewish Cemetery by Shasta County Hebrew Congregation in 1857, its' location caused concern for the alignment of a state highway planned in the early 1920's.

Because of it, Highway 299 was rerouted in 1923. A wrought iron fence was placed around the tiny marker and in 1942, the site was declared a state historical landmark. It was first registered as Landmark No. 377 on 28 July, 1942.

A permanent brick monument and brass plaque was erected near the grave. Location of this monument is on Highway 299, when traveling west, it is on the right: 40 degrees 36.239'N; 122 degrees 29.965'W.

The state's brass plaque reads:

CHARLES, INFANT SON OF GEORGE AND HELENA COHAN
BROWNSTEIN OF RED BLUFF, DIED DECEMBER 14, 1864. HE
WAS BURIED NEAR LAND ESTABLISHED BY THE SHASTA
HEBREW CONGREGATION AS A JEWISH CEMETERY IN 1857,
ONE OF THE EARLIEST SUCH CEMETERIES IN THE REGION,
SINCE THERE WAS NO JEWISH BURIAL GROUND IN RED
BLUFF, CHARLES' PARENTS MADE THE ARDUOUS JOURNEY
TO SHASTA TO LAY THEIR BABY TO REST. CONCERN
FOR THE FATE OF THE GRAVE LED TO THE REROUTING
OF HIGHWAY 299 IN 1923.
