He passed away at the home of his daughter in San Francisco. When he was 11 years old his parents moved him and their family to Vermont, where he grew to manhood and learned the trade of a marble worker.

When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the 2nd Vermont Infantry for 3 months. In 1862 he was appointed 1st Lt. of Company F of the Sharpshooters. Later he was appointed a Captain on the staff of General Hancock and then served under the same capacity under General Grant.

In 1898 he married Mrs. Watterman in Santa Rosa and then moved to Healdsburg.

He was a member of Sotoyome Lodge #123 F & A.M.
