born May 4, 1912 in Norcross, GA to Edward Harlan Dean and Marion Boyce Dean,
descendants of original settlers of Gwinnett County.
She was preceded in death by her Husband, James Chiles Lay, Sr. and Son, James
Chiles Lay, Jr. Survived by three children, Lynn Lay Embro, Judith Lay Peacock
and Daniel Leslie Lay and her sons-in-law, Joseph John Embro, Jr., William
Emerson Peacock and daughter-in-law, Krista Hall Lay; 11 grandchildren and 10
great grandchildren; brother-in-Law, Fred W. Johnson of Norcross, sister-in-Law,
Margaret Lay Gary of Knoxville, TN and several nieces and nephews.
"Ms. Annie Mae" was a lifelong member of Norcross First Baptist Church and
taught a ladies Sunday School class for many years. She was retired from the
Norcross Post Office, and in her retirement became a volunteer for the Red
Cross.
As a child Mrs. Lay trained in "elocution" with Miss Ida Wooten and was a
frequent actor in the operettas that were put on in the town of Norcross in the
twenties. A great story teller and recitor of poetry, she often gave readings
throughout her life, even into her 80s. She was famous for her interpretation of
the Uncle Remus stories.
In her retirement years, she became a quilter of some note, making a quilt for
each of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of her quilts
was exhibited at the quilt show at Bulloch Hall and she also exhibited her craft
at Cartersville, GA exhibitions.
The funeral will be Thursday, Apr 16, 1pm at Norcross First Baptist Church.
Interment will follow at Norcross City Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday
April 15th, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral
Home in Norcross. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to The Leukemia
& Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, PO Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA or Norcross
First Baptist Church Building Fund, 706 North Peachtree Street, Norcross, GA.
