Former Clovis Man Killed In Action

J.C. Lindop, brother of George Lindop of Farwell, died on December 25 of wounds received in action it was revealed in a telegram from the war department a few days ago from his mother, Mrs. Hettie Lindop of Childress, Texas.

Lindop was a gunner on a bomber in the Asiatic area when he was wounded. Young Lindop worked for several years behind the fountain at the Fox Drug and had a host of friends in the vicinity.

Childress, Feb 24 (Special) - The bodies of Cpl. Jack Bert Murphy and Pvt. J.C. Lindop of Childress and two other area war dead are being returned home from the Pacific Theater of Operations for reburial, the Department of the Army has announced.

Also being returned are the bodies of Pfc Neal W. Tyler, next of kin of whom was listed as Lee Tyler, Route 1, Hedley, and Pfc. John D. Calcote, next of kin John R. Calcote, Wellington.

Corporal Murphy was born at Highpoint community, near Childress, on September 10, 1921 and had lived in Childress County all of his life prior to entering the Marine Corps in December, 1940.
He received all his schooling in the Childress schools.

Murphy sailed for duty in the Pacific Theater in February, 1943 and returned home for a short furlough before going overseas again in June, 1944.

He served with the Third, Fifth and Sixth Marine divisions at Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Bougainville before he was killed in action on Okinawa on April 25, 1945. He is survived by his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Lucian E. Murphy of Childress; two sisters , Mrs. W.F. Harrell of Houston and Mrs. B.D. Buckley of Childress; and three brothers, James and Edger of Childress and Tolbert of Grants Pass, Ore.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Childress Church of Christ, by Rev. W.H. Colson, pastor of the First Baptist Church.

Lindop was born at Sherman, March 26, 1915 and moved to Childress in 1918. He attended Childress schools, and entered the Army in 1941. He was killed on Christmas Day, 1942, while serving in China.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. G.W. Lindop, Childress; a sister, Mrs. Fate Russell of Childress; and four brothers, Elbert of Childress, George of Farwell and Herbert and Olin of Los Angeles.

The Childress American Legion posts will conduct military rites at the graveside for Lindop and Murphy.

CHILDRESS, March 30. Funeral Services for Pfc. J.C. Lindop, who died in China during World War II are being held at the First Methodist Church here at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon.

Private First Class Lindop was killed on Christmas Day, 1942 while serving with the armed forces in China. He was born at Sherman on March 26, 1915 and came to Childress with his parents three years later.

After attending Childress schools and graduating from Childress High School, Lindop entered service in 1941 and went overseas the following year.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. G.W. Lindop of Childress and four brothers, Elbert of Childress, George of Farwell, and Herbert and Olin of Los Angeles.

The family has requested no flowers be sent to the funeral. Instead they suggested that a room at the Childress Hospital be furnished and dedicated to him.

Re-burial will be in the Childress Cemetery under direction of the Newberry funeral home.
