This memorial in Italy Cemetery was erected by the State of Texas to honor these pioneer settlers of Italy. Only a scoop of dirt from John's grave was buried at this site. The event was documented by Melba French, John's great-granddaughter, in a letter to the Editor of "The Italy Press," published 5 February 1967.
