ROBERT H. "BOB" FREDERICK
Robert H. “Bob” Frederick, 87, of Elyria, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at EMH Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
Born in Amherst, he had been a resident of Elyria since the age of 10. He was employed by Bendix in Elyria for 31 years, retiring in 1978, and worked for Thew Shovel. He was an Army veteran who fought in Europe in the last year of World War II. He started at the Battle of the Bulge and was in the American unit pushing east that linked with the Soviets pushing west. He served as past commander Elyria Post 12 American Legion and could be considered Elyria’s military historian.
He was a writer of the stamp collectors "Stamp Facts" column for the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram since 1962. He was active with Cub Scouts as Cub Master, Boy Scouts as Scout Master and Commissioner, first disaster chairman of Elyria Red Cross and first editor of Ohio Postal History Journal.
He was a member of the Elyria Kiwanis, American Philatelic Society, Writer’s Unit American Philatelic Society, Garfield-Perry Stamp Club, member and organizer of Black River Stamp Club and member and eight-year chairman of Elyria Biographical and Historical Commission. He initiated the 175th Anniversary Book and Celebration and served on city council. He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, where he served as deacon and former board chairman of Lorain County Historical Society.
Survivors include daughters Susan L. Walzer of Penfield Township and Barbara L. Frederick of Cleveland; a son, Robert H. Frederick Jr. of Cleveland; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold M. Frederick of Winter Park, Fla.; and a sister, Florence M. Bassett of Kent.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helene "Terry" (nee Reeves) Frederick, in 2001; a sister, Gladys J. Nofzinger, in 1998; and his parents, Henry C. and Mayme E. (nee Minch) Frederick.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. Services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 330 Second St., Elyria, with the Rev. Dennis F. Fredriksen, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Elyria.
