IN MEMORIAM
Charles A. Baker, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baker, was born at Vermilion, Ohio, March 5, 1866. His early years were spent at Vermilion and Brownhelm and at the age of twelve years he moved with his parents to the Abbe road, where his parents resided until the death of his father one year ago.
On February 23, 1892, he was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Henning of Elyria. They removed to Toledo in the spring of 1892, where they have since resided. To this union were born two boys, Clarence and Harold.
Fourteen years ago, Mr. Baker entered to employ of the M S and L S railroad as fireman. Two years ago he was promoted to the position of engineer. It was in the faithful discharge of his duty on the morning of July 29, 1903, near Black River switch west of Elyria that he was fatally scalded by the bursting of an arch flue. With all possible haste, he was brought to Elyria, bearing the terrible pain with remarkable fortitude. He was taken to the Elyria hospital where all possible medical aid was given, but to no avail. His wife, sons, and mother who was [sic: were] visiting in Toledo, were hastily summoned to his bedside, but [did] not arrive until a few moments after his death.
The funeral services were held in Elyria on Friday morning conducted by Rev. Lehman and Rev. Wannamaker. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, of which the deceased was a member, attended in a body and conducted the services at the grave. The remains were laid at rest by the side of his father, in Ridgelawn cemetery.
Mr. Baker leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, two sons, his mother, Mrs. Henry Baker, one brother, Frederick of Toledo, four sisters, Mrs. J P Schmittgen, Mrs. Esther Hammer, Miss Cora Baker of Elyria, and Mrs. F W Boehm of Toledo.
