Death of John Austin, an Old Settler of Center Township
The death of Mr. John Austin, which occurred on the 5th inst., has caused profound regret among a wide circle of friends and acquaintances throughout this county where the deceased was well known and universally esteemed. Mr. Austin was born in Ireland [sic, probably Scotland], coming to this country in 1849. He took up his residence in New York city, where he remained nearly a year, when he again removed to this county, locating upon a farm in Center township, where he established a comfortable and prosperous home, and resided from 1850 until his death at the ripe old age of 82 years. Mr. Austin was prostrated from the effects of a severe cold on Monday last. His sufferings, however, were of short duration, and on Friday last he passed peacefully away to the land of eternal rest. He leaves a wife and nine children, grown to manhood and womanhood, to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. In his long residence in this vicinity, Mr. Austin has left an unblemished record that will live on, a pleasant memory long after the silence of the grave has closed over the form of the lamented dead.

John Austin, an old settler of Dubuque county, died on the 5th, aged 82 years. He leaves a wife and nine grown-up children.

[Note: John Austin married Mary Brown on 28 June 1826 in Lisbarnet, Down, Ireland. Research suggests John was possibly born in Scotland, though he lived in Ireland at his marriage. At the time of their marriage, John gave his home as Lisbarnet, Kilmood Parish and Mary gave her home as Dromreagh, Killinchy Parish. Mary's father's name was given as Savage Brown on their marriage record. Their children were Agnes A., James M., Mary Jane, Savage Brown, Thomas, Martha, Jane, Robert B., John and Samuel Brown Austin.]
