A Tribute to Gussie Rae Abell:

Gussie Rae Abell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Abell, was born in LaRue County, Kentucky, March 3, 1908, and departed this life on June 25, 1950, at the age of 42 years, 3 months, and 20 days.
When she was less than a year old she came with her parents to Oklahoma. They established residence on a farm northwest of Alva. The reemainder of her life has been spent in Woods County, Oklahoma. In October, 1949, she and her father moved from the farm to Alva, where she made a home for him since the death of her mother in 1936. She attended the rural school and later was a student at Northwestern State Teacher's College. Gussie obtained her life certificate and began her career as a teacher when she was 19 years of age. She taught 23 consecutive terms in various rural schools of Woods County. She taught in Greenleaf district this past year until illness forced her to give up her school duties on February 13, 1950. Throught the years many boys and girls have been encouraged and inspired by her example as a teacher and friend.
Gussie was seriously ill in the spring of 1937. Since that time there have been many severe attacks of illness. In spite of her suffering she was always cheerful, kind and loving. During the last 10 weeks of her life in hospital, her sweet, ever ready smile and sunny disposition always made it a pleasure for her loved ones and hospital attendants to care for her.
Gussie was a member of Alva Baptist Church for a number of years. During her long illness, the visits of her pastor were a great source of courage and comfort to her.
Surviving relatives are: Her father, Emmett Abell, of Alva; her sisters, Mrs. Jessie Bush of Alva, and Mrs. Mary Parson, of Dacoma; two brothers-in-law, Curtis Bush of Alva, and Wesley Parson of Dacoma; two nephews a neice and one grandneice, Her Mother, an infant sister, an infant brother and another sister, Mrs. Edythe Boerner, preceded her in death.
Her loved ones and her great number of friends have sustained a great and incomprehensible loss, however, "earth's loss is Heaven's gain." -- Alva Oklahoma.
