Mrs. Jane "Jean" Achtenberg, 88 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 29, 2005 at Bethammi Nursing Home. Born in Scotland to Agnes and Robert Hamilton, she was the eighth of nine children. Her chosen profession was to be a nurse and she received her nursing diploma at Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow in 1942. She served with the British army in India during the war. Jean immigrated to Canada with her husband and family in 1955 and eventually they settled in Thunder Bay. She was able to continue her nursing career working many years at Dawson Court. In 1966 she married Edward Achtenberg and together they shared many happy years at "Janeddy", their camp at Dog Lake. Jean was a long time member of Wesley United Church and active with the UCW Lydia Group. Her church family were amongst her best friends and sharing her faith with them was always a source of comfort and strength. Jean meticulously recorded her life story daily on her calendars and in journals. She faithfully remembered every significant event and kept in touch with family and friends by writing cards and letters. Jean's delightful Scottish accent often revealed a rich and intriguing life of adventure at home and abroad. Her greatest love was her children and grandchildren and she always looked forward to their visits. Jean is survived by her children Margaret Ambrose (nee: Grant) of Winnipeg, Stuart (Jo-Ann Corbeil) Grant of Toronto; the children of her late husband, Rhodella (Larry) Zweep of Kenora and daughter-in-law Jane Achtenberg; grandchildren Grant, Brian and Derek Ambrose, Malina Corbeil, Zach Grant Scott, Cindy (Paul) Kennedy, Kelly (Greg) Arnold, Lorne (Natalie) Gleeson, Debbie (James) Ball, Kathy Novak, Michelle (Bryan) Toderick, Joanne (Ray) Hogard, David (Adora), Andrew (Christine) and Mark Achtenberg; 17 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild as well as many other relatives in Scotland, Australia and other parts of the world. Jean was predeceased by her father Robert, mother Agnes, infant son Ian, husband Ed, son-in-law Ed and five sisters and three brothers. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 3, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at Wesley United Church with a reception to follow at Jenkens Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre, 226 S. Syndicate Avenue. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.
