He was a bricklayer, and with his brother, Captain James Bragg, built the courthouse in Lebanon, Indiana. He lived in Traders Point, Indiana for 33 years and moved to Zionsville, Indiana in 1880. His wife, Mahala was "taken seriosly ill with heart trouble" and a week later John "began complaining and both declined rapidly". John died on a Tuesday, and Mahala died the following morning.
