REDLANDS Retired Marine Corps. Col. Bernard M. Boress, a Redlands resident for the past 33 years, died Saturday, April 12. He was 83 years old.

Boress served as the head of the Law and Justice Agency of San Bernardino County, retiring from that position in 1980. During a 28-year career in the Marine Corps, Boress served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. He was commanding officer at Camp Fuji in Japan, assistant chief of staff of the Third Marine Division in Vietnam and commanding officer of the Recruit Training Regiment at the San Diego Recruit Depot, where he oversaw the training of more than 89,000 recruits. His final assignment before retiring in 1970 was as chief of staff of the Marine Corps Base at Twentynine Palms. Boress was awarded numerous honors for his military service, among them the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, with a combat "V" for valor, two Navy commendation medals (the second in lieu of a Bronze Star), plus a Presidential Unit Citation.

In 1994, Boress was honored as Redlands Rotarian of the Year for his service, especially his computer work on the club's behalf. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1988, and until he became ill last year, had a perfect attendance record since joining Rotary in 1982.

A native of Pennsylvania, Boress was a graduate of New Jersey State College at Glassboro where he met his wife, Elinor. He worked as an elementary school principal and teacher in New Jersey before joining the Marines. While in the Marines he earned his masters in business administration from George Washington University and attended the National War College Defense Strategy Seminar in Washington, D.C.

A member of the Amateur Radio Relay League, Boress was an active amateur radio operator for most of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elinor, and two sons, Robert, a television composer, and James, a video director.

Funeral services will be private.

Those wishing to make a donation in his memory may contribute to the Youth Services of the Redlands Rotary Club, the Salvation Army or the charity of their choice.
