Andrew J. Bittinger, of Arendtsville, died on Tuesday morning, aged 71 years. He is survived by his wife and four children, Edward Bittinger and Mrs. Abraham McCaslin, of memallen township, and Miss Emma and Osia, at home, also one brother Philip Bittinger, of Beechersville and Mrs. Henry a Smelser, of Arendtsville. The funeral was held on Thursday, Rev. D.T. Koser, his pastor, conducted the service. Interment in GreenMount cemetery, in Arendtville. He was a life long member of the Lutheran church

ANDREW J. BITTINGER, farmer and lumberman, P.O. Arendtsville, was born in Franklin Township, near Arendtsville, September 6, 1839, and is a son of Andrew and Barbara (Beamer) Bittinger. He was reared to farming, and remained at home until twenty-one years of age. In 1865 he married Anna K Warren, a daughter of Elijah Warren, of Menallen Township, this county, and soon after took charge of his father's old homestead, which consisted of 260 acres. In 1881 he bought the property, and has since also carried on a lumber manufacturing business, turning out about 60,000feet per annum, mostly of white pine. He is a Republican in politics; has served his vicinity as school director six years, and one term as assistant assessor. He is a member of the Lutheran Church at Arendtsville, and takes an active part in supporting it; has also served as elder of that congregation two years. Mr. and Mrs. Bittinger have four children: Edward G., Addie S., Emma J. and Osia O.

Fire Destroys Barn
Last week the barn on farm of Andrew I Bittinger of Menallen township was entirely destroyed by fire. The building took fire from a spark from an engine running the thresher in operation at the time. In addition to the barn all contents were burned consisting of 250 bushels of wheat, 200 bushels of oats, all the hay, a lot of phosphate and farm machinery. The tenant, Abraham McCauslin, lost his share of the crops and a calf. The thresher, PPreston beamer, lost a horse in the barn at the same time. The barn was insured in teh Mummasburg Mutual Fire Protection Society for $1000.

Andrew J. Bittinger, a well known and highly respected citizen of Arendtsville, did at his home in that place at five o'clock this morning form complications of diseases aged about 70 years.
Mr. Bittinger was a retired farmer, a grest portion of his life having been spent on his farm in Menallen township where he also conducted a saw mill. He was a member of the Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife and four children. Mrs Abraham McCauslin and Edward Bittinger, of Menallen township, and Misses Emma and Osia at home.
Funeral at two o'clock Thuraday afternoon from his late resedence conducted by the Rev. David T. Koser. Interment in Greenmount cemetery Arendtsville
