Donald L. "Don" Newman, 74, Topeka, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at a Topeka nursing home.
Mr. Newman owned and operated the Quality Oil service station on south US-75 highway near Topeka from 1950 to 1983. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was born Feb. 21, 1924, at Hibbing, Minn., the son of Ben and Helen Sticka Pecka. He moved to Topeka in 1946. Mr. Newman was a life member of Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion.
He was married to Bessie D. Newman on Aug. 2, 1946, at St. Joseph, Mo. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, David Michael Newman, Leominister, Mass.; two daughters, Terry Sue Boltze, Columbus, Ga., and Vicki Lynn Key, in Germany; two brothers, James Zeeman, Moriaka, Japan, and Jack Newman, Northglenn, Colo.; two sisters, Dorothy Morse, Bremerton, Wash., and Edith Denny, Ajo, Ariz.; two grandsons; and a great- grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.
Burial with military graveside services conducted by Post No. 1 of the American Legion will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Newman will lie in state after 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m.
