Ensign A. R. Houghton, USNRF, was designated Naval Aviator #859 (lighter-than-air) in 1918. Accepted a USN commission in 1921.

Lieut. Houghton, USN, was killed in the destruction of the Navy dirigible USS SHENANDOAH (ZR-1) near Caldwell, Ohio. He was the only officer killed not to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Funeral held on 08 Sept. 1925 at Saint Paul's Cathedral, Boston.
