Charles Daniel Atherton was a seaman, he made two voyages aboard whaling ships. He was as a crewman aboard the Oak, which sailed from Nantucket (1867-1869), and the Corneila, which sailed from New Bedford (1871-1873). He was then engaged in the coasting trade hauling cargo. He moved to Chicago in 1875. He was the son of James Munroe Atherton and Phebe Freeman Swift. Husband of Florence Josephine Gove and father of thirteen children.
