Thomas M. Payton, 73, of Monrovia passed away on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 12:35 a.m. at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born on December 14, 1935 in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Woodrow M. and Edna M. (Scott) Payton.

He was a 1954 graduate of Washington High School in Indianapolis and served during the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force from June 11, 1954 to October 29, 1957.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy J. (McClean) Payton of Martinsville. They were married on November 20, 1958.

Tom retired on June 1, 1992 after 30 years of employment from General Motors Truck & Bus in Indianapolis as Plant Guard.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #230, V.F.W. Post #1257 and the Moose Lodge #1127 all of Martinsville. He was also a member and past Grand Chef of the 40/8 and past president and member of the United Plant Guard Workers of America.

He was a licensed pilot and flying instructor and an avid Notre Dame Football fan. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include is wife; one daughter, Nancy Hovanec of Lincoln, NE; two sons, Eric Payton of New Bern, NC and Woodrow Payton of Mechanicsville, MD; one sister, Carole Payton of Indianapolis and nine grandchildren, Jessica & Bobby Hovanec, Madeleine, Alex and Delaney Payton, Courtney, Danica & Taylor Konyk and Nicole Dean.

Family and friends may visit on Monday, April 27th from 5-8:00 p.m. at Neal & Summers Funeral & Cremation Center. A celebration of life service will be on Tuesday, April 28th at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in New South Park Cemetery in Martinsville. Members of the American Legion and V.F.W. honor guard will honor him with military graveside rites.
