On Tuesday, February 13,2007 James Alex Cooper, humble and faithful servant, entered the presence of his Lord from San Antonio,TX. Mr. Cooper was born in Warren, Arkansas to Robert G. and Rosa Carter Cooper. On November 6, 1940, he married Gladys Elizabeth Baker, of Warren, to whom he was a devoted and loving husband for 56 years until her death in 1996. He is survived by his sister Reba Clanton of Greenville, Mississippi, brother Jerry of Raleigh, North Carolina, son and daughter-in-law Richard and Janelle of San Antonio, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Ralph and Meg of Waco, Texas, daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Larry Pumpelly of Richmond, Virginia, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his wife Gladys, his sister Laura Herring of Warren, Arkansas, and brothers Earl of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Clyde of Mansfield, Ohio. Prior to his service in the Army in World War II, he worked at the Southern Lumber mill in Warren. In 1946, he began working for Carter-Jones Lumber in Akren, Ohio becoming mill foreman. In 1954, he opened the first Cashway Lumber, which later became Carter Lumber Company, where he worked until his retirement in 1981. In 1983, Alex and Gladys moved to San Antonio, Texas. The Coopers were members of McNaughton Street Baptist Church in Akron from 1946 to 1953, Broadman Baptist Church in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio from 1953 through 1983, and Shearer Hills Baptist Church from 1983. Alex willingly served the church in many capacities, including deacon and chairman of the deacons at Broadman Baptist Church, and on the Executive Board and as moderator of the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio. He was on the Committee of Committees of the Southern Baptist Convention. At Shearer Hills Baptist Church, he served as a deacon. All who knew Alex were blessed by his gentle and godly spirit, and his willingness to help anyone with any need, no matter how great or small. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, honor, and service. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 16, 3:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Funeral service Saturday at 3:00 pm in the Chapel at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio. Memorial gifts may be made to Shearer Hills Baptist Church, Missions Fund, 12615 San Pedro Ave., San Antonio, Texas, 78216. Sunset Funeral Home.
