Samuel, age ll, born Tennessee, is found on the 1850 census of McNairy County, Tennesssee in the household of Albert and Mary Shelton. Although his surname is dittoed as Shelton, it is evident that both Samuel and a young girl named Drucilla are not the children of said Albert Shelton. The death certificate of Albert and Mary's oldest son lists Mary's maiden name as Haney. Is this her surname from a previous marriage? Is Mary a sister to Samuel and Drucilla or is she their mother? Albert and Mary Shelton, along with their Shelton children moved to Lafayette County, Arkansas prior to the 1860 census. It appears that Mary died in that place about 1864.

Samuel is next found on the 1860 census of Cass County, Texas. He soon moved across the county line to Lafayette (now Miller) County, Arkansas where he purchased land from the Federal Government. He later served as a Confederate soldier in the Bright Star Rifles during the Civil War.

Samuel married Laura Elizabeth Attaway on Feb. 8, 1863 in Lafayette County, Arkansas. According to the Samuel Haney bible, he and Laura were the parents of thirteen children. Six of the children died young.

After the marriage, Samuel and Laura had children born in Arkansas prior to moving to Montgomery County, Texas where they are found on the 1870 Census.

In 1889 Samuel and his family moved to Berwyn, Indian Territory and are found on the 1890 and 1900 census of Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (now Gene Autry, Carter County, Oklahoma). He lived in this area the remainder of his life.
