US Congressman. An 1819 graduate of Harvard University, he engaged in the mercantile business in Salem, Massachusetts. A member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1824 to 1829 and Senate in 1830, he was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian Democrat to Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Rufus Choate, and served from 1834 until his own resignation in 1838, when he was elected mayor of Salem. On his retirement from this office in 1842, he devoted the whole of his salary as mayor to the public schools of Salem. He engaged extensively in the lumber business in Canada, and died in the burning of the steamer 'Montreal' on the St. Lawrence River. His body was never recovered and there is a cenotaph to his memory in Harmony Grove Cemetery in Salem.
